In Emacs and Pico, how do I delete many lines of a document at once?

To delete many lines from a document at once, follow the appropriate instructions below:

Emacs

  1. Move your cursor directly before the region you want to delete. Set a mark by pressing C-@ or C-Spacebar.

  2. Move the cursor to the end of the region you want to delete and press C-w .

Note: If you aren't sure how to enter these commands in Emacs, see In Emacs, how are keystrokes denoted?

Pico

  1. Move your cursor directly before the region you want to delete. Set a mark by pressing Ctrl-6 or Ctrl-^ .

  2. Move the cursor to the end of the region you want to delete and press Ctrl-k .
