In the IU STCs, how do I remove a virus from a computer?

At Indiana University, computers in the UITS Student Technology Centers (STCs) automatically run Symantec/Norton AntiVirus (SAV/NAV) upon startup. When any file is opened, it is also scanned for viruses.

If you think that a file on your removable media or on the hard drive might be infected with a virus, you can use SAV/NAV to find and remove the virus. (For more information about removable media, see In which IUB STCs can I find removable media devices?)

Note: It is much easier to scan networked drives if you have them mapped before you start SAV/NAV. If you don't have the networked drive open beforehand, you must mount the drive and have it as an icon on your desktop before SAV/NAV will recognize the presence of the drive. For instructions, see In Microsoft Windows, how do I map a drive?

Windows

  1. From the system tray, double-click the SAV/NAV shield icon (when you move your mouse over it, it will say "Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition").

  2. Select the drive to scan and double-click it:

    • If present, the A: drive is the floppy drive. (See Floppy disk drives phased out of Windows STCs.)
    • The C: drive is the hard drive.
    • The D: drive is the DVD/CD-RW drive.
    • Other removable media drives will be assigned a letter designation between E: and Z: .

Note: If you select Scan All Networked Drives, SAV will scan any networked drives connected to your computer, which will take a very long time. To save time, on the left of the screen, from the list of options, you can choose only the specific drives you wish to scan.

  3. To scan a networked drive:

    1. On the left side of the screen, click Scan Computer.
    2. Click the box next to the appropriate drive.
    3. At the bottom of the screen, click Scan.

Note: Once you have allowed network scanning, SAV defaults to scanning all networked drives on the computer in addition to the drives you have selected. If you forget to select only the drives that you specifically intend to scan (typically the A: and M: drives), and SAV begins scanning every drive on the computer, you can cancel the scan. To cancel, in the Virus scan window, click Stop. Then, at the virus scan summary, click Close.

  4. When SAV finishes scanning, it lists any viruses it found in the Scan Results window, with options and/or the measures taken. Click Close to exit this screen.

  5. When you are finished, click Exit.

Mac OS X

  1. From the Apple menu, choose Utilities, and then Virus Scan. This will open the Virus Scan folder.

  2. Click the Norton AntiVirus folder. NAV will open automatically.

  3. Choose the drives to scan.

Note: If you need to scan a networked drive, you must open it before you open NAV.

  4. Click the Scan/Repair button. NAV will scan the files you have selected and will automatically remove any viruses it finds.

  5. If necessary, you can cancel a scan in progress. (This is very useful if you accidentally start scanning your entire hard disk, for example.) To do this, click Cancel. Then, in the Virus Summary window, click Done. This will take you back to the main NAV window so you can choose the drives or files you really intended to scan.

  6. When NAV finishes scanning, it will present the results of its scan in the Virus Summary window. Click Done to exit this window.
