Indiana University was one of the 34 founders of Internet2 and is now one of over 200 members of the Internet2 project. The Internet2 project joins participating universities with corporate and affiliate partners to develop new capabilities for networked computing.

Internet2 partners work to provide applications (and the network bandwidth to run these applications) that cannot be supported on the commodity Internet and are not necessarily appropriate for transport on the Very High-performance Backbone Network Service (vBNS) supported by the National Science Foundation. Applications appropriate for Internet2 are various kinds of cooperative ventures, such as research collaborations, distance education and conferencing in real-time, and shared use (and use from a distance) of one-of-a-kind scientific instruments. An example of an Internet2 application at IU is VARIATIONS, a digital music library system. VARIATIONS is a joint project of the Cook Music Library and the IU Digital Library Program.
