ARCHIVED: In Outlook, why am I receiving email saying that a message has been opened by the recipient?

In Outlook, you may receive notification that a message you sent has been read (a "read receipt"). If you do not want to be notified when a message you send has been received or read:

Outlook 2010

  1. From the File menu, select Options.
  2. Click the Mail tab.
  3. Under "Tracking", make sure Delivery receipt confirming the message was delivered to the recipient's e-mail server and Read receipt confirming the recipient viewed the message are not checked.
  4. Click OK.

Outlook 2007 and earlier

  1. From the Tools menu, select Options....
  2. Under the Preferences tab, click E-mail Options....
  3. Click Tracking Options....
  4. Uncheck Read receipt and Delivery receipt, and then click OK to clear all the dialog boxes.
