In Windows 2000 or XP, how can I view a PostScript file?

To view a PostScript file in Windows 2000 or XP, you will need to download and install a PostScript file viewer. Several viewers are readily available through the web.

RoPS

RoPS is a commercial package available in two varieties. The first offers support for level one PostScript only. The newer release offers support for level one and level two PostScript. You can download a free version with level one support or a demo of the current full version.

GSview/Ghostscript

Ghostscript is a PostScript interpreter, and GSview is a graphical interface for Ghostscript; you can download both from the Ghostscript, Ghostview and GSview web site. Both are freeware, and both are installed in the Indiana University Bloomington Student Technology Centers.

Comparisons

The free version of RoPS supports only PostScript level one and will refuse to open some more complicated documents with embedded graphics. It does seem to handle simple documents well. The GSview/Ghostscript combination is capable of opening files that the free version of RoPS can't, including PostScript level two files and files generated using HP drivers.

RoPS is easier to install than the GSview/Ghostscript combination.

RoPS and GSview/Ghostscript are able to print the viewed file on both PostScript and non-PostScript printers.
