XML (eXtensible Markup Language) is a specification developed by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). XML became a formal specification in February 1998, and is a subset of SGML designed for use on the Internet. Like SGML, XML is a metalanguage that lets users define their own descriptive markup languages. With XML, it is possible to create customized tags to surpass the functionality of HTML.
