Classic Networking refers to the Mac OS communications software before the release of Open Transport. The primary components are MacTCP and the Network control panel, which enable access to TCP/IP and AppleTalk networks, respectively.

Classic Networking requires less disk space, processing power, and memory than Open Transport, so it is ideal for slower computers and older versions of the system software. However, it is not compatible with Mac OS 7.6 or higher, nor will it even work on newer model computers. In general, it is less stable and capable.
