Originally introduced in 1991 as "AppleTalk Remote Access", Apple Remote Access (ARA) began as a technology for remotely accessing AppleTalk networks. Using the client software installed on Mac OS computers, users could dial into computers running the ARA server software to have access to file sharing, printers, and other network services offered via AppleTalk.

As the product matured and included support for additional protocols, AppleTalk Remote Access was renamed Apple Remote Access. In version 3.0, Apple rolled OT/PPP into the Remote Access client, transforming it into a fully functional PPP client. For PowerBook G3 and iMac computers that shipped with Mac OS 8.1, and for all computers running Mac OS 8.5 and higher, Apple Remote Access replaces OT/PPP. Owners of older computers or previous versions of the operating system may purchase the ARA client from Apple. It requires Open Transport 1.1.2 or later.
