Before you can use the 1-Step Backup feature of your Iomega Zip drive, you must first install the Zip drive and the Zip drive tools. See the Knowledge Base document ARCHIVED: In Windows, how do I install a Zip drive and the Zip drive tools?

When the Zip drive tools are installed, follow these steps to back up your files:

  1. You should have a folder on your desktop and under the Start menu, in the Programs submenu, called Iomega Tools.
  2. Open this folder and choose the icon that says 1-Step Backup.
  3. A screen will come up saying "I can do a backup of all files from your...". There will also be four buttons at the bottom of the screen. Click the Customize button.
  4. A screen with four tabs (General, File Selection, Security, and Run Options) should appear. You can use these tabs as follows:
    • General: Here you can enter a description of the backup, view a history of any previous backups, and choose to use file compression.
    • File Selection: This is where you choose the files you want to back up. You can browse through the files, much as you do in Windows Explorer. To back up files on your Zip disk, check the red boxes next to the chosen files. You can choose an entire folder or entire drive by checking the box next to the corresponding item.
    • Security: Here you can choose to put a password on the data you back up so that no one can access it without your authorization.
    • Run Options: Here you can choose whether or not the program beeps when it is ready for you to insert another Zip disk.

  5. When you have finished customizing the way the program will back up your data, click OK. That should take you back to the first screen.
  6. With your Zip disks ready, click the Backup Now button. The program will analyze the data you chose to back up and tell you how many disks you will need. Then it will ask you to put the first disk in the drive.
  7. It will then ask you if you want to erase all files on the Zip disk you inserted. You can choose to keep, erase, or view the files on the disk.
  8. Once you choose whether or not to erase, the backup process will begin, with progress showing on a taskbar. This process may take quite a long time.
  9. Once the backup is finished, a screen will appear with three buttons (OK, View Report, and Help). To complete the process, click OK.
