A SafeWord card is an external authentication security device, formerly used for secure access to institutional data or sensitive data at Indiana University. The following applications required the use of a SafeWord card at IU:

  • FIS
  • HRMS
  • SIS
  • EPIC required a card only when the employment or account role was "Purchasing Users" or "Accounts Payable Users", or the user was the approver of EPIC documents.
  • TIME required a card only for the Payroll Processor role.

In June, 2011, UITS moved from SafeWord card authentication to OTP (One Time Password) tokens. For more, see ARCHIVED: What was OTP (One Time Password)?

Note: Certain legacy systems will continue to use SafeWord authentication after other IU systems have been migrated to OTP. Users of these systems have been contacted by the Support Center and Identity Management Systems directly regarding the migration, and should not return their SafeWord cards at this time.

If you still have a SafeWord card, you should return it to your departmental LSP, SafeWord Card Coordinator, or Fiscal Officer. The card is the property of your department.
