Note: UITS may no longer be able to verify the accuracy of information regarding Windows versions of Outlook older than 2000, and may not have the materials necessary to support them. Therefore, UITS recommends that you upgrade to a current version. At Indiana University, you can download a current version of Microsoft Office for Windows, which includes the current version of Outlook for Windows, from IUware. If you are in a department or using a Macintosh Outlook client, contact your local support provider (LSP) or the UITS Support Center before upgrading or changing your software.

Microsoft Outlook 98 and Outlook 2000 both include a Folder Size button that allows you to view quota usage statistics. In normal situations, you can can right-click the top level folder, Outlook Today - [Mailbox - username] (where username is your username), select Properties, and then click the Folder Size button to obtain current information about quota usage. For more information on checking the quota usage of your Exchange account, see the Knowledge Base document Check the storage space of your IU Exchange account

In some installations of Outlook 98, the Folder Size button may be missing. If the button does not appear in your installation of Outlook, you may add it by editing the Windows registry.

Warning:
This contains instructions for editing the registry. If you make any error while editing the registry, you can potentially cause Windows to fail or be unable to boot, requiring you to reinstall Windows. Edit the registry at your own risk. Always back up the registry before making any changes. If you do not feel comfortable editing the registry, do not attempt these instructions. Instead, seek the help of a computing support provider.

The following instructions will not create a Folder Size button in Outlook 97. Attempting to follow these instructions with Outlook 97 may cause serious problems with your installation of Outlook or Windows.

To add the Folder Size button in Outlook 98, follow these steps:

  1. Start the Windows Registry Editor by clicking the Start button, then selecting Run.... Type regedit and click OK.
  2. Navigate to the following key in the Windows Registry:
      HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\8.0\Outlook
  3. Locate the ChkFldrSize value on the right side of the screen. If you don't see ChkFldrSize, add this value using the following directions:
    1. Click the Outlook Folder once to select it.
    2. From the Edit menu, select New, then DWORD Value.
    3. Type ChkFldrSize, and then press Enter.

  4. Click the ChkFldrSize icon in the right pane. From the Edit menu, select Modify.
  5. Click Hexadecimal, and in the "Value Data" box, enter a 1 (the number) to enable the Folder Size button.
  6. Click OK, and close the Windows Registry Editor.

You should now see the Folder Size button in the Outlook 98 properties dialog box of your Exchange mailbox.
