Connecting to the wireless network

IU Secure is the wireless network for students, faculty, and staff to access when on campus. IU Secure uses WPA2 Enterprise (Wi-Fi Protected Access) for authentication; no VPN is needed. IU Northwest will have IU Secure by spring semester 2010; it is available at all other campuses except IPFW.

You'll need to first configure your computer's wireless card so your device can see IU's wireless network; see Windows on-campus connections to the IU wireless network or In Mac OS X, how do I configure my network settings to use my AirPort card?

Note: Beginning January 1, 2010, UITS will require MAC address registration to connect to the IU Secure network. This applies to new devices only; any device that has connected to IU Secure during fall semester 2009 will be grandfathered into the DHCP database and will not need to register. Wireless locations

Wireless access is widely available on IU campuses.

The IU Secure wireless network is available in all IU Bloomington and IUPUI residence halls (with the exception of Wright), along with the Campus View Apartments. If IU Secure is not yet available in your campus residence, you may operate a properly configured wireless access point (WAP) as an exception to the IT-19 Extending the University Data Network and IT-20 Wireless Networking policies from the University Information Policy Office (UIPO). Once IU Secure is available in your residence, this exception will no longer apply and you will need to remove your WAP from the network. Wireless for IU visitors

If you are visiting IU and need to access the Internet via your personal computer while on campus, you can get temporary wireless Internet access by obtaining a Network Access account. See Network Access accounts (guest wireless access) at IUB, IUPUI, and IUE.

Note: Indiana University and Purdue University allow researchers and visitors wireless access to their own networks from each campus. For details, see Wireless access at Indiana University and Purdue University.

Off-campus VPN connections

Note: When connecting from off campus, SSL VPN is the replacement for IU's IPsec- and PPTP-based VPN services, and UITS recommends using it now if your campus supports it. PPTP is retired at IU Bloomington and IUPUI, and IPsec VPN service at those campuses will be retired by fall 2010.
