ARCHIVED: What is the DSL-VPN partnership between Smithville Telephone and IUB?
Smithville Telephone Company and Indiana University Bloomington have teamed up to provide high-speed remote access service for IUB students, faculty, or staff residing in the Smithville Telephone exchanges. This offering is based on Smithville Telephone's Digital Subscriber Line (DSL), IU's virtual private network (VPN), and a direct, high-speed connection between the Smithville and IUB networks. To take advantage of this service, you must first contact Smithville Telephone to subscribe to the DSL service, identifying yourself as an IUB student, faculty member, or staff member. Next, you must add the VPN client to your computer at home; this software will allow you to become a virtual member of the IUB campus network while utilizing the high-speed DSL technology provided by Smithville Telephone. For more information, see The basics of VPN at IU.
According to the partnership, Smithville Telephone will provide subscribers with:
- DSL service at speeds reaching 1.5Mb/sec for $27.95 per
month
- A DSL modem at no additional expense
- A free self-installation kit
IUB will provide:
- The VPN server, extending all IU network services directly to the
home
- VPN client software and support for VPN installation
