In Windows 7, Vista, and XP, the System Restore feature automatically creates restore points at certain intervals. These points can be used to restore your system to a previously working state. You may want to manually create a restore point if, for example, you are about to install new software or hardware.

To manually create a restore point:

  1. In Windows 7, from the Start menu, select Control Panel, System, and then System Protection.

In Vista and XP, from the Start menu, select consecutively All Programs or Programs, Accessories, System Tools, and then System Restore.

  2. In Windows 7, click Create. In Vista and XP, select Create a restore point and click Next.
  3. Type a name for the restore point, and click Create.
  4. When the point has been created, click Close.
