ARCHIVED: What is CommonName software, and how do I remove it?

This content has been archived, and is no longer maintained by Indiana University. Information here may no longer be accurate, and links may no longer be available or reliable.

CommonName, which is often bundled with file sharing software and is also available as a separate download from the CommonName web site, can interfere with reaching certain Indiana University services, including IU Webmail and Oncourse.

CommonName can use a word or phrase typed into a web browser to send you to the web site that has paid to register that name with the CommonName company. For example, if there were a web site named http://www.shoes4sale.com/, CommonName would allow you to enter shoes and still get to the Shoes4sale web site. The software does this by intercepting what is typed into the URL field of a web browser and submitting that to CommonName's servers, which then redirect your browser to the web site associated with that keyword.

Unfortunately, you cannot fully remove CommonName by using the uninstall option in the Windows Add/Remove Programs control panel. To completely remove CommonName, UITS recommends that you use Windows Defender. After you have done so, your computer will return to normal.
