ARCHIVED: At IU, if I am a student, faculty member, or staff member, how and when can I create my first computing accounts using the AMS?

This content has been archived, and is no longer maintained by Indiana University. Information here may no longer be accurate, and links may no longer be available or reliable.

If you are an admitted student, or a faculty or staff member whose paperwork has been processed by IU Human Resources (HR), you can create your first computing accounts at Indiana University online using the Account Management Service (AMS).

Note: For the AMS, use a web browser capable of making a secure connection (one that supports SSL), such as the latest versions of Internet Explorer, Firefox, or Safari, and be sure you are able to accept cookies.

  • For students, the online account creation service will be available to you approximately 15 minutes after you are admitted.

Note: For international students, IEP students, Continuing Studies or Independent Studies students, and other special students, your first computing accounts will be created according to the procedures listed in the Knowledge Base document Create your first IU computing accounts (admitted students, faculty, staff, affiliates, and those returning to IU)

  • For faculty and staff, under normal circumstances you will not be eligible for accounts, and will not be able to create your accounts, until the morning after your employment record is entered into the university's HR data system. If you are not getting paid by IU and therefore will not be processed by HR, your department will need to request your computer accounts. Departments may make that request by using the AMS. Once the request has been processed, the person making the request will receive notification and instructions about how to proceed in creating your account.
Note:
For departmental, student organization, or group accounts, you can change the passphrase if you know the current one. Other account settings must be handled by the account owner.

To create your initial accounts from a Student Technology Center (STC) or Residential Technology Center (RTC) computer, follow the instructions in the Knowledge Base document ARCHIVED: At IUB or IUPUI, if I don't have a Network ID, how do I use a kiosk to create my initial computing accounts?

You will need to use your last name, your birth date, and the last 4 digits of your 9-digit IU student ID number, or your full 10-digit University ID (UID) to log into the service.

Allow yourself 10 to 15 minutes to complete the account creation process. Your session will time out if left inactive for more than five consecutive minutes, requiring that you log in and begin the process again.

To create your first computing accounts from any Internet-connected computer, follow these steps:

  1. Visit the AMS at:
      http://itaccounts.iu.edu/
  2. Select Student or Faculty or Staff and click the radio button next to Create my first IU computing accounts and passwords. Then click Continue.
  3. Before you can create your accounts, you will need to agree to the guidelines for appropriate use of your computer accounts at IU. Read the guidelines on each screen and click Continue. If you agree to the guidelines for appropriate usage, type yes at the final screen and then click Continue. (If you do not agree to these guidelines, you will not be able to create accounts at this time; you may contact gds@iu.edu for more information.)
  4. Follow the instructions on each page that follows to create your accounts and password.

If you run into problems while creating your accounts, contact the computing Support Center at your IU campus. For contact information, see the Knowledge Base document Contact your campus IT Support Center

The AMS will allow you to create an email account and to set your password, and also to create two accounts, your Network ID and your ADS Domain account, that will allow you to authenticate to various IU services.

After you have created these initial accounts, you can use your Network ID username and password to access the AMS again and create additional accounts. For more information about the accounts available to you, see the Knowledge Base document Computing accounts at IU For information on how to create additional accounts, see the Knowledge Base document Get additional IU computing accounts

Note: If you have ever been admitted to the IUPUI, Kokomo, Columbus, or Southeast campuses of IU (even if you have not attended classes at any of these campuses) and are now attending classes at IU Bloomington, you may need to take some extra steps after using the AMS if you would like to access the Macintosh STCs or RTCs at IUB. To use the Macintosh STCs and RTCs, create an IUB Network ID account and a Shakespeare account according to the instructions in the Knowledge Base document Get additional IU computing accounts
