What is the IU Microsoft Update Service?
Note: If you have been redirected to this page from
the msupdate.iu.edu URL, it is because you cannot
directly connect to that site with your browser. The URL is part of
the configuration to be done in the Group Policy Editor. For
configuration instructions, see At IU, how do I configure my computer to use the IU Microsoft Update Service?
The IU Microsoft Update Service is a quick and effective way to help secure your computer. It automatically installs patches and updates to a computer running Microsoft Windows and supported Microsoft software.
This service provides the same updates that you receive through Windows Automatic Update, but since it is hosted on the IU network, patches will download faster than if you were to download them from Microsoft directly.
When you connect your computer to the IU Microsoft Update Service, your computer will compare its currently installed patches with those available on the update server. If any patches or updates are missing, your computer will download and install them automatically.
Currently, the IU Microsoft Update Service provides updates for the following products:

For information about how to configure your computer to use the IU Microsoft Update Service, see At IU, how do I configure my computer to use the IU Microsoft Update Service?
Note: This service is only one part of properly maintaining and securing your computer. The IU Microsoft Update Service does not guarantee installation of patches, and therefore is not a substitute for patch administration on your computer. You should use additional tools to manage your computer's patches:
- To see if critical updates are needed, visit Windows Update.
- To verify that patches have installed properly, see When using the IU Microsoft Update Service, how can I verify that patches install successfully?
