How do I get access to IU institutional data and applications?
Access to Indiana University institutional data and applications is managed by a number of different units throughout the university, with varying processes for granting such access.
Prior to your getting access to these systems, University Human Resource Services (UHRS) must have processed your paperwork, and you must have created your first IU computing accounts; see How do I get my first computing accounts at IU?
Typically, three steps are required to gain access to institutional data and applications at IU:
- The user requiring access must complete the "Acceptable Use
Agreement - Access to Technology and Information Resources -
Employees". See At IU, where can I find the "Acceptable Use Agreement - Access to Technology and Information Resources - Employees" for access to institutional data and applications?
- The user or his or her supervisor or Data Manager must submit a
request to the unit responsible for granting access to the data or
application.
Note: For most applications, employees cannot request their own access. After the employee has completed the agreement, the supervisor or Data Manager must make the access request. During the hiring process, departments typically have a Data Supervisor available to work with a Data Manager in order to coordinate requests for access.
- If the access requires a SafeWord card, the user or his or her departmental SafeWord Card Coordinator must obtain that card. See At IU, what is a SafeWord card and how do I get one?
Many departments have an individual who can coordinate this process for you. If your department does not have someone who handles these requests, OneStart provides the Data Access service to guide you through the steps necessary to obtain access to institutional data and applications. Go to OneStart at:

Log in with your Network ID, if necessary. Select the
Services tab, and click Administrative Systems and
then Data Access. Follow the instructions in the "Data
Access Service" area to complete the three-step process.
