In Oncourse CL, as an instructor or site owner, how can I see what my students or participants see?

The simplest way to see your course or project site as a student is to click Enter student view at the bottom of the menubar. To return to your normal view, click Exit student view.

Note the following considerations for certain tools:

  • Original Test and Survey: The student view in the menubar will not work with Original Test and Survey. To see an assessment from the student's viewpoint, from the Original Test and Survey Main Menu, click Oncourse Tests and Surveys (Student). Then click Take Test or Survey. You can also preview a test (from the Test Menu, click Preview Test), though this does not show the questions exactly as the students see them (i.e., with the option to answer).

  • Assignments: In the Assignments tool, you can use either the global student view option in the menubar, or the tool's own student view capability; see Seeing how assignments look to participants.

  • Gradebook: You can use the student view in the Gradebook tool, but because you cannot assign grades to yourself in your instructor role, you will not see what actual grades look like to students. If you want to see what this is like, you can create a Guest account, add that persona as a student to your course site or practice course site, and assign grades to that persona. Then log in using your Guest account to see your fictional grades. See the instructions below. (Note that doing so may alter your class grade averages.)

Using a Guest account to view a site in a different role

The student view option discussed above only allows you to see what participants in the student role see. If you want to see what users in another role might see (for instance, the member role in a project site), create a fictional persona to add to your site:

  1. Request and activate a Guest account; see At IU, how do I create a Guest account?

  2. Log into Oncourse CL using your Network ID, and add the Guest account to your site in the desired role. See Adding, editing, or removing participants.

  3. Log out of Oncourse CL, close all browser windows, and then log back in using the Guest account username and passphrase.
