Configuring a desktop email client for Imail or Umail

Both Imail and Umail support connections from email clients using the IMAP protocol.

Imail

To configure your email client for Imail email:

  • Username: Use username@imail.iu.edu (replace username with your Imail username, which should be the same as your Network ID username).

  • Password: Use your Windows Live password (not your Network ID passphrase).

  • IMAP server: Use outlook.com .

  • SMTP server: Use pod51000.outlook.com .

  • SSL: Specify Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) for incoming (IMAP) connections.

  • TLS: Specify Transport Layer Security (TLS) encryption for outgoing (SMTP) connections.

Note: If the mail client does not have TLS as an option, select SSL and use port 25 instead for outgoing mail.

Note: Use the same username and password to authenticate with the SMTP server. Do not select Secure Password Authentication.

For complete instructions on configuring supported email clients, see Microsoft's Connect to My Exchange Labs E-mail page under "E-mail programs that support POP and IMAP".

Umail

Note: Some users have reported problems accessing their Umail inboxes via IMAP due to authentication errors. If you cannot access your inbox, verify the following:

  • Double-check that you have Enable IMAP selected in Gmail options (see instructions below).
  • In your email client, make sure that you entered @umail.iu.edu after your username.
  • Your mail client shouldn't be set to check for new mail too often. If your mail client checks for new messages more than once every 10 minutes, your client might repeatedly request your username and password.
  • Try unlocking your account by using Umail's unlock CAPTCHA page.
  • Check whether you can authenticate directly to the Gmail login page with your Umail credentials. If you cannot, try resetting your password; see At IU, how do I set or reset my vendor password for Imail or Umail?
  • If you still cannot access your inbox, contact your campus Support Center.

To read your Umail email from an email client, you must first enable IMAP in Umail:

  1. Log into Umail.

  2. At the top of any Umail page, click Settings.

  3. Click Forwarding and POP/IMAP.

  4. Next to "IMAP Access", select Enable IMAP.

  5. Click Save Changes.

Once you've enabled IMAP in Umail, configure your email client for Umail using the instructions from Google. Instead of  username@gmail.com , enter  username@umail.iu.edu  for your email address.

Note: Use the same username and password to authenticate with the SMTP server. Do not select Secure Password Authentication.
