How do I retain an IU-sponsored email account after graduation?
You have two options for maintaining an IU-sponsored email account after you graduate:
Create an Imail or Umail account
Note: On October 29, 2009, UITS began migrating undergraduate student accounts from the IU Webmail (Cyrus) system to the Google-sponsored Umail system. For more, see About the automatic email account migration from IU Webmail (Cyrus) to Umail.
Imail and Umail accounts are not disabled when their owners leave IU, so you can continue to use your account after you graduate.
With an Imail or Umail account, your return address will remain
username@imail.iu.edu or
username@umail.iu.edu after you
graduate. Your campus address (e.g.,
username@indiana.edu ) will remain active only
if you set your preferred address to your Imail, Umail, or IU Connect
alumni email account (see below). Forwards to other preferred
addresses will result in the deactivation of your campus address. See

Create an IU Connect alumni account
The IU Alumni Association
(IUAA) offers free, lifelong email accounts to all IU alumni. Alumni
and students graduating within one semester can select an email
address at username@alumni.iu.edu or
username@alumni.iupui.edu . These accounts
are part of IU Connect, a suite of services including
email, instant messaging, blogs, and classified
ads.
Your campus address (e.g.,
username@indiana.edu ) will remain active only
if you set your preferred address to your Imail, Umail, or IU Connect
alumni email account. Forwards to other preferred addresses will
result in the deactivation of your campus address. See At IU, how do I register my preferred email address?
Additionally, as an alumnus you can keep your IU Network ID for life if you are registered with the IUAA. After you graduate, your Network ID will provide access to special deals for IU alumni and to resources from the IUAA.
