Using Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard), how do I configure my Cyrus (Webmail) or Exchange mail?
Note: For the settings to configure a desktop client to read your Imail or Umail account, see Configuring a desktop email client for Imail or Umail.
Note: If you are using Mac OS X 10.5 or earlier, see At IU, how do I configure Mac OS X Mail to read my Cyrus (Webmail) or Exchange mail through IMAP?
Mac OS X has a built-in email client called
Mail. Normally this is located in the Applications
folder, but you can also launch Mail from the Dock.
If you have not entered any Mail or MobileMe settings in your
System Preferences, a Mail setup window will appear the first time you start Mail. If the window doesn't appear, from the Mail menu, select Preferences... . Then, in the preferences window, click the Accounts icon, and in the bottom left corner, click the + (plus) button.
In the "Welcome to Mail" or "Add Account" window, enter your account settings:
For an Exchange account:
- In the first window, enter your name in the "Full Name:" field.
In the "Email address:" field, enter:
username@campus
Replace
usernamewith your IU username andcampuswith your specific campus address (e.g.,indiana.eduoriupui.edu). Thus, if your username isjdoeand you are at IU Bloomington, the address would bejdoe@indiana.edu. For your password, type your IU passphrase. Then clickContinue.
- In the next window, your settings should be automatically filled in. You will also have the option of automatically configuring iCal and Address Book. Click the
Createbutton to complete your account setup.
For a Cyrus account:
- In the first window, enter your name in the "Full Name:" field.
In the "Email address:" field, enter:
username@imap.iu.edu
Replace
usernamewith your IU username. For your password, type your IU passphrase. Then clickContinue.

ClickContinue.
- From the "Account Type:" menu, select
- In the
Outgoing Mail Serverwindow:- Next to the "Description:" field, type a descriptive name (e.g.,
IU mail relay). - For your outgoing mail server, type
mail-relay.iu.edu. - Check the box next to
Use Authentication. Your username and passphrase should already be entered.

- If the Account preference window isn't open already, from the
Mailmenu, selectPreferences...and then in the toolbar, clickAccounts. Under theAccount Informationtab, change the field next to "Email Address:" fromusername@imap.iu.edutousername@campus. Replaceusernamewith your IU username andcampuswith your campus address (e.g.,indiana.edu,iupui.edu). Thus, if your username isjdoeand you are at IU Bloomington, the address would bejdoe@indiana.edu.
- Click the
Mailbox Behaviorstab and uncheckMove deleted messages to the Trash mailbox.Note: This is the simplest option for removing unwanted messages, and it makes Mail behave the same way Webmail does. When you delete a message, it will either disappear from the listing or become grayed out. To permanently remove deleted messages, first make sure you are viewing the list of messages in your account. Then, from the
Mailboxmenu, selectErase Deleted Items. If you would rather move deleted messages to a folder you can empty periodically, see In Mac OS X, how do I get the Mail application to remove messages I delete? - You can choose to store draft messages, sent messages, notes, or
junk messages on the server by checking the appropriate box(es). You
can also select an alternate folder later for storing these
messages. Choose this folder in your folder list, and from the
Mailboxmenu in Mail, selectUse This Mailbox For. Then, choose the relevant option.
