ARCHIVED: On the Shakespeare or Jewel systems at IU, why can't I read Usenet newsgroups?

This content has been archived, and is no longer maintained by Indiana University. Information here may no longer be accurate, and links may no longer be available or reliable.

Note: UITS is replacing the Shakespeare and Jewel systems with a new email environment called Cyrus mail. For information about the new system, see the Knowledge Base document ARCHIVED: What is Cyrus mail? On the new system, you can access your mail via IU Webmail or a desktop client, but not via Pine. For more information about your email options, see the Knowledge Base document ARCHIVED: If I used Pine on the Shakespeare or Jewel systems, what do I need to know about the recent email upgrade?

To ensure maximum performance of the Shakespeare and Jewel systems at Indiana University as email systems, the availability of additional programs has been kept to a minimum. Therefore, UITS has removed the ability to read news from within Pine.

There are several newsreaders to choose from at IU, such as Netscape Navigator or Outlook Express on your workstation, or the tin and trn newsreaders on Steel.

If you have configured Pine to read newsgroups on your Shakespeare account, you will receive the following error message:

[502 You have no permission to talk. Goodbye.]

For information about how to turn off this error message, see the Knowledge Base document ARCHIVED: On the Shakespeare systems at IU, why do I get the error message "502 You have no permission to talk. Goodbye"?
